A night guard, also called a grinding or occlusal splint, is a dental device made to protect your teeth from damage caused by unconscious clenching or grinding. It also helps reduce tension and stress on your jaw joints and muscles (temporomandibular joint, TMJ).
The following symptoms may indicate that you grind your teeth and would benefit from an occlusal splint:
After your dentist confirms you’d benefit from an occlusal splint, they will take impressions or scans of your teeth. This will then be sent to the lab to create your device. Splints are typically made from clear acrylic giving a more discrete appearance.
The device takes 1-2 weeks to complete in our laboratory.
Whilst a splint is a great option for most patients, wearing a device at nighttime is not always ideal. At The Smile Place we have device free alternatives. Call and discuss your options with a member of reception today!
