The MAS is a custom-fitted oral appliance designed to treat obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) and Snoring. It is similar to a sports mouthguard, lightweight and fits in your pocket!
The device is worn over the teeth and typically consists of two separate mouthpieces that fit together or are sometimes connected by elastic straps.
The lower mouthpiece is positioned slightly forward of the upper mouthpiece, supporting the lower jaw during sleep. This helps to create more space in the upper airway and prevent it from collapsing.
MASs are generally well-tolerated and can be a highly effective treatment option for patients with mild to moderate OSA or who cannot tolerate a CPAP machine.
The MASs are custom-fitted to each patient and typically made from hard, durable plastic or, more recently, virtually indestructible 3D-printed Nylon.
They are also adjustable, which allows for fine-tuning of the jaw position to optimize the device’s effectiveness. The device requires minimal maintenance, which includes daily brushing before putting it away for the day. And a weekly soak in an oral appliance cleanser helps keep it looking and feeling fresh!
A mandibular advancement splint is designed to treat obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). It can act as lightweight and convenient alternative to a CPAP machine. However, a MAS may not be suitable for patients with severe OSA or other underlying medical conditions.
Step 1: Assessment
Just had a sleep study and have been recommended an oral appliance – MAS? You are ready to start straight away! If not, we recommend you see your GP or Sleep Physician for an assessment. We can assist with sleep studies at home if required.
Step 2: 3D Scans
We will perform a thorough examination of your teeth, mouth and jaws. If you are found to be a suitable candidate for an oral appliance, digital scans of your teeth will be taken. We will discuss the available MAS designs and suggest the most appropriate one for you.
